Work in Comics: Guidelines

You have reached this page because you are a creator looking for comic work or you are a creator looking to build your unique comic book team. Before you get into the mix of things, Work In Comics would like to take this chance to give you some tips to help make your experience here a good one.

Contractual Negotiations

Before you start a job or project; we recommend that you put together a contract/agreement. This contract does not need to contain a ton of fine print or legal terminology. Instead, it only needs to describe the rules of the job listing you applied to or posted, and it only needs to be in plain English.

Five Basic Steps in creating a basic contract:

  1. Contact Information: Make sure both parties or multiple team members are mentioned; by providing address and make sure to label them by Creator Type.

  2. Description of the Job: Write out responsibilities, of the parties involved in the contract. Provide all details so there are no problems in the long term. Mention any monetary values as well, which can include editing fees, page rates, and media kits.

  3. Duration: Make sure you outline specific deadlines when stuff has to be completed by. By detailing deadlines your project will always be on time.

  4. Copyrights: Make sure you outline in the contract who owns what rights to what properties. Many legalities can arise due to this issue if you are unsure of intellectual property rights please consult a professional attorney.

  5. Signatures: Make sure both parties sign the contract, and have copies. These are the basic steps in creating a viable contract in Building Your Comic Team.

As a creator always make sure before sending payment to anyone that you have contracted to see some progress results if not the completed project. You are able to provide progress steps and report to continually show your work on the project.

Remember, these basic steps are provided based upon industry standards. Every creator will experience different results, in how they communicate with one another. We don’t want any creators being taken advantage of on Work In Comics.
